How to measure your doorway for a magnetic curtain

A few careful measurements make all the difference. Find the opening, check the fixing surface and choose a size with confidence.

Measuring the width of an ivory wooden doorway with a tape measure

A magnetic door curtain looks its best when the fit has been considered before the box arrives. The aim is a straight top edge, an unobstructed passage and two centre edges that meet comfortably. Begin with the doorway itself, rather than guessing from the size of the door.

Measure the opening first

Use a tape measure to record the clear width of the opening. Check it near the top, in the middle and near the floor: older British homes can have frames that are slightly out of square. Write down all three measurements in centimetres. Then measure the height from the top of the opening to the floor, on both sides.

Keep these opening measurements separate from the finished curtain size. A frame-mounted curtain also needs a suitable surface around the opening for its fixing tape. Measuring only the space you walk through does not establish whether the fixing edge will sit in the right place.

Look at the frame, not just the numbers

Check the width and condition of the available flat fixing surface at the top and sides. Note any hinges, handles, mouldings or switches that could interfere with the curtain. A glossy, uneven or fragile surface may need a different approach from a sound, flat frame.

Lay the tape measure along the proposed fixing line and imagine the curtain hanging from that point. Consider the door's full swing, any raised threshold and the space needed for the lower edge. Do not assume the curtain can be shortened: cutting could affect the bound edge and magnetic alignment.

Choose against the size guide

SnugMag is offered in several finished sizes, from 80 × 200 cm to 110 × 220 cm. Compare your measurements with the measuring and fitting guide before selecting an option. If you are between sizes or the frame has unusual details, resolve the fit before ordering rather than simply choosing the nearest number.

A useful final check is a photograph of the whole doorway alongside your written measurements. It makes it easier to spot a handle, slope or fixing-surface issue that was missed at first glance.
